Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was required to halt operations for hours when multiple of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The operational halt led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that twenty-five weather balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the aviation facility.
Approximately 14 of the meteorological devices sent during the weekend passed through the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's main urban center and close to the frontier with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
No fewer than 11 balloons transporting numerous containers of black-market cigarettes have been collected so far, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are not unusual in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been documented the previous year.
Regional Consequences
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of numerous instances in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the balloons.
Smuggling Techniques
In response to questions about why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that such operations become unprofitable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have resulted in flight interruptions across European nations.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout European airspace.
