Tetris Didn't Triumph at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category May Address This Issue

As any significant honors show nears, you'll find an outcry for introducing of new categories to honor overlooked contributions and delight the spirits of enthusiasts with niche passions.

My colleague made the case supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. So would strategy board titles, which is a passionate advocate's mission. Yet I need to apologize in advance if I try to elbow in front just as with other blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification supporting my request is the most urgent and important of all. The demand is this: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and it will always generate discussions resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason film award organizations don’t do it. But it is a necessary evil in the world of video games, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.

For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, specific award classifications remain vital.

Present Award Structure

Leading game ceremonies currently feature genre categories for Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these six categories successfully include numerous genres, allowing placement for numerous titles.

Different situation exists for logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Think about these outstanding current releases, all very different: the architectural riddles from a specific release, intense tile-matching of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. What category would fit them within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.

Acknowledgment Issues

Numerous examples exist of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly that have no home at major award shows, if they accidentally match award groups including Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested independent game categories.

  • An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated in any category in 2014
  • A different innovative game received no nominations in 2019
  • A beloved organization game was overlooked recently
  • Limited numbers of brain-teasers managed to sneak into niche award types

Significance of Puzzle Games

Commonly they're modest productions, but the art in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles stand as most popular titles worldwide maintaining this status for many years.

The famous puzzle experience rivals popular creative games competing to become best-selling game of all time; it also contends for best game of all time. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, while interacting with almost every other genre.

The Solution and Justification

Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. You could fill multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.

And to reiterate, these include experiences without proper classification at major gaming awards. Logic title developers operate at the challenging frontier game development, developing some of most fundamental forms of the video game form. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting generations.
