Federal Reserve Lowers Interest Rates for Second Time This Year During Financial Instability

The US monetary authority reduced interest rates on Wednesday, marking the second rate cut in the current year amid economic turbulence originating from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Decision Arrives at Unprecedented Time for Central Bank

The move to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a span of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an unprecedented juncture for the central bank. The authority has been under immense pressure to cut rates despite ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Notes Job Market Changes

In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the unemployment rate had gone up but stays modest. “Job gains have slowed,” the statement reads. “Inflation has risen and remains moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Fed’s Job

The ongoing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Gathering of important economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are on leave during the closure.

Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve typically studies BLS data to determine labor market conditions, including the count of employment gains created to the market and the current jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was published in early September, before the closure, and gave a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the jobs market in August.

The figure of positions created to the economy in August was lower by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and joblessness crept up to four point three percent – the highest since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Indicate Ongoing Slowdown

Though the bureau was scheduled to release last month’s employment data in early October, it halted its publication once the closure started. Private payroll firm ADP reported recently that the business segment cut thirty-two thousand positions in last month, a indication that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for labor has declined quite sharply,” Fed chair Jerome Powell stated earlier this month, which he had previously said comes from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Shows Gradual Increase

Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the bureau still issued its price statistics for September that showed that costs are rising, although gradually. Prices increased 3% over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target price increase is 2%.
